Measure a belt, not your jeans tag

Trouser sizes are often generous, so the number on a label is a poor guide. Take a belt you wear often, lay it flat and measure from the fold where the buckle attaches to the hole you use most. That length is your belt waist.

No belt to measure? Run a soft tape around your waist where your trousers sit, over the fabric, and add an inch.

Reading a waist range

Each of our belts comes in ranges such as 32 to 38 inches or 38 to 44 inches. Pick the range your waist sits inside. If you land on the boundary, such as exactly 38, take the larger range.

Trimmable, fixed and stretch belts

On the belts marked trims to fit, including most ratchet leather belts and the flip top rigger belt, you can take the buckle off and cut the strap. Order the larger range and cut once. See trimming a ratchet belt.

The True-to-Size ratchet belt has a fixed length and should not be cut. Order it about two inches above your waist size.

The braided stretch belts and stretch rigger belts give as you move, so a snug setting still feels comfortable when you sit.

Width and belt loops

Most of our belts are 1 3/8 inches wide, which passes through dress and casual belt loops. The rigger belts and two eyelet leather belts are 1 1/2 inches, a little broader, for jeans and work trousers. The boys belts are 1 and 1.1 inches.
